Thousands of Californians will see changes to their SNAP benefits after the CalFresh pilot project received $10 million in funding.
The CalFresh Fruit and Vegetable Electronic Benefits Transfer Pilot Project, which ended in April due to lack of funds, provided low-income Californians with more affordable, healthy food options.
Participants received $1 back for every $1 spent on fruits and vegetables, with refunds up to $60 monthly, aiding 93,000 households.
Ending the pilot program resulted in a $95 reduction in monthly CalFresh benefits, impacting food security for many families.
Representative Alex Lee emphasized the program's effectiveness and lobbied for its continuation to combat food insecurity.
With renewed funding, the CalFresh Fruit and Vegetable EBT Pilot is expected to help more families access nutritious food.
Californians must apply for SNAP benefits, ensuring they complete necessary paperwork to receive the aid they qualify for.
