The SSA announced that millions will no longer receive SSI benefits. Over 100,000 were removed from the SSI rolls in the past year.
SSI benefits are for blind, disabled adults and children with little income. Most beneficiaries are disabled, while 1.1 million are over 65.
From May 2023 to May 2024, SSI beneficiaries dropped by 119,395, with 6,141,034 disabled and blind claimants, a decrease of 140,034.
California saw a drop of 16,573 SSI applications. Texas and New York also reported declines in SSI claimants by 14,587 and 9,555, respectively.
The SSA updated the disability determination process. The new rule, effective June 22, 2024, simplifies evaluating prior work experience to five years.
SSA no longer considers jobs lasting less than 30 days. The changes aim to streamline applications and provide accurate evaluations.
