Social Security benefits for about 20,000 disabled workers have been terminated in recent months, impacting many lives.
In April, 7.25 million disabled workers received benefits. By May, this number decreased to 7.23 million, with the average aid being $1,540 per month.
Social Security will now regard only relevant, high-demand occupations when evaluating disability claims, a move welcomed by many disabled Americans.
Disability benefits are often terminated due to death, medical or work recovery, and conversion to retirement benefits.
SSI benefits have different standards. Blind and disabled adults remain in the disability group at age 65. SSI-disabled children are re-evaluated at 18.
The SSA evaluates disability claims based on the ability to work, medical records, age, education, and work experience, using the Dictionary of Occupational Titles list.
The SSA is removing 114 outdated occupations from its list of acceptable career options for disability benefit evaluations, such as railroad telegraphers and reptile farmers.
